Description:

History: The Washburn House at 11 Suffolk Street seems to be an original Federal Style building of five bays, two and a half stories with a Gothic Revival entrance added at a later date. It was probably built around 1828 when Noah Washburn lived there. Noah Washburn is referred to as Captain on his tombstone but there are no records found to support that. An early 1828 advertisement in the Sag Harbor “Corrector” by Noah calls for an apprentice to learn the Tinsmith business. He married Nancy Hedges in 1819 in Connecticut but his son Henry Wheaton was born in Sag Harbor in 1827 indicating they were living there at that time.

The earliest record of the house is on the 1854 map with Noah Washburn living at the corner of Suffolk and Amity Streets. In the 1850 census Noah had a new wife Satira, Nancy having died in 1834. At this time they seemed to be running a boarding house with two seamen and their families living with them. By 1860 thru 1870 Noah and his wife lived there with no boarders. The value of the house was listed as $600 in the 1850’s. By 1860 the values goes to $1200 and the values goes down to $800 in 1870. This is indicative of the changing economics of Sag Harbor during that time. By 1860 the Whaling industry was finished and Sag Harbor suffered an economic depression in 1870. Noah Washburn died March 6th 1875 and is buried in Oakland cemetery.

Today: The house currently is configured and has a Certificate of Occupancy for six apartments. Ranging from studios to two bedrooms and has leases in place thru September 30th 2016. Now, like Noah, is your turn to return this Sag Harbor piece of history from apartments to a single home of it’s former glory.
